About the Author
James T. Farnsworth was born and raised in historic Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was one of the founding members and later President of the Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead and member of the Friends of the Daniel Boone Homestead. James was a tour guide for both Colonial Homesteads and also became active as an interpreter of Colonial military and civilian life. James has spent many tedious hours of research and translation of period texts to bring you this compilation of Colonial games. James T. Farnsworth lives with his wife and son outside of Frankfurt, Germany where he continues to pursue his interest in early American and local history.

I do quite a bit of revolutionary war re-enacting and I found this resource to be just the thing I've been looking for to add that extra little detail to my "living history." I highly recommend it to all colonial re-enacters. I'm surprised this theme hasn't been published before. Thank-You!!!

He explains the significance of martial arts in Renaissance education and everyday life and offers a full account of the social implications of one-to-one combat training.Like the martial arts of Eastern societies, ritualized combat in the West was linked to contemporary social and scientific concerns, Anglo shows. A profound and valuable contribution

Eagerly awaited by historic combat enhusiasts of all persuasions for two years, the pre-release buzz surrounding this work -- characterized by expectant suspense on the one hand and tacky name dropping and tail-wagging subservience on the other -- has turned out not only to be warranted but justified.
Sydney Anglo plunges the reader into a hidden world of combat activity whose presentation has no equal by virtue of its sheer scope and erudite analysis. Lavish illustrations taken from some of the most popular and some of the rarest fighting manuals of renaissance Europe combine with carefully documented and annotated critical commentary to produce a work unparalleled in the field.
The thorough academic approach, combined with Anglo's intelligent and at times humorous personal style, is providing a backbone of respectability and credibility to a subject matter that frequently does its darndest to self-implode any claims to being taken seriously by overvaluing the emotionally affirmative needs of some modern practitioners.
Of course, this book is no How-to-Manual. It does not contain detailed analysis of individual techniqes. Nor does it quite answer the question in which specific combative scenarios the arts summarized under the modern Anglo-American pop culture handle "Martial Arts" were applied. (This particular aspect of mainly legal and extra-legal history might make for a book in itself.)
But that's not the point.
Short on brawn and long on brains, Anglo introduces us to the very core of these arts... the masters themselves... the way they thought... the methods they (and their graphic artists) employed to transmit complex ideas and sophisticated systems of ethics, philosophy, and physical skill to students, patrons, readers, and of course to us.
What makes this book relevant not only to the enthusiast of medieval and renaissane arts, but to the entire Western martial arts community: Anglo foregoes the pat shoe-boxing usually associated with focus on a partiular period. His work doesn't leave the reader stranded in an era that is hermetically sealed off from the modern period:
While rightfully emphasizing the differences between modern sport and ancient art, Anglo provides tantalizing glimpses of continuities... manifest in the literary traditions of individual systems that track the influence of a particular work -- through its reprints, translations and plagiarisms -- from the Renaissance far into the modern period.

Essential Reading

Anglo's groundbreaking work is definitely one of the most influential treatises on Renaissance combat ever written. Seldom does an author write so in depth and cover so much material.
Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe is fascinating from the first page; Anglo pens right toward the meat of the topic. Rather than reiterating what other authors have said and said again, Anglo only briefly mentions those sources widely available or quoted, instead preferring to bring light to those relatively unknown sources with which few are familiar, but which deserve much more acclaim. This book is not a light read by any standards; it should keep the most erudite of scholars busy for days. The further one reads into this book, the more one realizes he didn't know.
Anglo makes every effort to cram information into every page, but does so with the witty flair of a seasoned writer who knows how to keep his audience interested. He provides ample photographs, scans, copies, and illustrations to underscore his study of Renaissance fighting, but does not drown the reader in unnecessary artwork. He covers more facets of Renaissance martial arts than most other authors even mention, from the methods of instruction to the evolution of combat. Affording a separate chapter to each style of personal defense - swordsmanship, barefisted brawling, polearm use, and the like - Anglo opens up a door to history that has never been opened before, and many anxious scholars are graciously pouring through.
As he points out himself, the history of Renaissance martial arts is one that is very much neglected, both by historians and by martial artists. Historians generally shy away from warfare and fighting, and, apart from mentioning the outcome of a few major battles, barely acknowledge the existence of violence. Many martial artists tend to focus on technique, without much regard for history. Anglo has broken the barrier, and gave those scholars - both martial and historical - who crave to know a means through which to do it.
Overall, this book is excellent. It is a unique and thorough view of the Renaissance that has yet to be matched. Martial Arts of Renaissance Europebelongs in the library of martial artists of Western and Eastern heritages alike: required reading for any fan of martial history.

A must for serious European martial artists

One of the greatest problems facing modern enthusiasts of our European martial history is the availability (or lack there of) of scholarly study from the viewpoint of the period in which these arts were practiced. Too often they are approached from a standpoint of their applications in sport fencing or stage combat. Anglo has tried very hard to separate himself from these ties and look at the arts from their position in history, and while he occasionally falls shy, in most instances he succeeds remarkably well.
As a practitioner of medieval combat I was pleased to see many of the theories and postulations many of us have espoused borne out and explained in a scholarly text. The case Anglo makes for a systematic basis for training well before the Renaissance is well stated and helps to legitimize the work reenactors are performing today. As others have stated, this is not a "how to" manual, but is rather an indispensable tool to assist in researching masters and understanding the environment in which these skills were used. I have informed all my students and friends in the field that this book needs to be in their collection. I am certain I will reference it many times in the future.

The section on financial stmmt modeling and projections (pro forma) is one of the best out there. It is only a slice of what the book offers but if you are an equity analyst and asked to build models, I would buy this book based on the section it has on forecasting. It is not the end all be all, but a solid effort to supplement your other modeling books.........

Gives you friendly help with an unfriendly program

The File Maker Pro 2006 version is not user friendly. At work we have this "File Maker Pro Bible" a book 2.5" thick and it is so difficult to use I go unconscious in 10 minutes. This Dummies book is very good, very comfortable to use. It shows what is on the screen or gives you explicit instructions where to look for icons, etc. I do not recommend the 2006 version of File Maker Pro but if you're stuck with it like me, then get this book. It really helps.

We purchased the FileMaker v.11 from Amazon, and MISTAKENLY accepted their recommendation to purchase a "package" consisting of two books, in addition to the software. Well, the software is v.11, and the "Dummies" book talks exclusively about v.8! Somewhere between v.8 and v.11, there must have been a sea change in the software, because the "Dummies" book is of ABSOLUTELY no use!
As we know, there's practically no (usable) documentation coming with software packages these days, and the Dummies books are usually of great help. Here, though, somebody at Amazon was apparently not watching the store.

Review of Filemaker pro Design & Scripting for Dummies

This book has proved helpful to me because I am new to the Filemaker Pro Database tool set. However, the only complaint I find is that the book clearly does not tell you up front for what particular edition of Filemaker its designed for. Some things jjust aren't covered. An example of this is different samples of uses for scripts and calculations.

I would love to see a book about how to take different classes of problems and use proper script, and operators, to calculate something and use the answer in a solution. But concatenating text to provide a full name doesn't cut it in my book. So for me, the book isn't as useful as it could be.

From the preludes series, I have come to expect average books. They don't live up to the original chronicles series or the legends series, but they manage to stay in a quality worth reading. Flint the King is no exception.

Some of the problems:

Flint goes through the darken wood with no difficulty. Darken wood is supposed to be so dangerous few people have actually gone through it and lived(chronicles) but the book treats it like any other trip.

Flint becoming king/protector of the gully dwarves and getting along with them doesn't fit in the least with his stance toward bupu and the others in the chronicles.

Flint is too strong in this book. He manages to fight off a troll at one point, yet this is set before the chronicles in which he has difficulty fighting the low end draconians.

Despite all of this however, like the other preludes books, if you just read it on its own and ignore all the contradictions with earlier and IMO better books, you will find that you are reading an all together enjoyable book.

This book really shows you a side of Flint that we don't get to see in the books with the companions. If focuses on his leadership abilities, his compassion for other races (especially the gully dwarves)and even shows him over coming his own prejudice towards his cousins (mountian dwarves). It also shows that Flint is capable of love. Very adventurous, funny and might even shed a tear for him. If your a fan of the companions then do yourself a favor and read about Flint. :) Youll see Flint in a whole new light.

Good and moving tale

Flint the King is one of the better dragonlance books in the genre. I was a little hesitant when i first picked up this book, thinking that it would be boring the whole way through. But i was severely wrong in that thinking. Not only was the book action packed, funny, emotional, but it had a great story line that keeps you hooked the whole way through.
When Flint goes to the lair of the mountain dwarves to investigate a murder, as well as discover what is happening to his town, he ends up getting captured. He is setenced to death, but ends up getting saved by some gully dwarves, along with a rather accentric mountain dwarf.
Flint must make the smelly, dirty, dumb gully dwarves into an army that can help him save his village from a terror that could wipe the town off of the map. Along with the female mountain dwarf, Flint tries desperately to save not only his life, but the life of all his family and friends.
This book is filled with just the right amount of action, suspense, and emotion, carrying you through the book until the last page flips by. Yes Flint is romantic in this book, but it does nothing to take away from the character that was established by Wies and Hickman back in the day. This book is definately up to the wonderful duo's standard, and will prove to be a great read.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book.

It was exactly what I was looking for and answered so many of my questions about energy work and healing. Since reading it, I have met the author Tamara Laing, and she is a delightful person. I am very grateful to her for writing this book. Loved her personal story of how she got on this path. Love all the amazing quotes on energy work, healing, the light of Christ, etc. I share this book with everyone who is interested in the energy medicine world and how it relates to the light of Christ and healing.

A Book You'll Want to Keep on Your Nightstand!

This wonderful book has 8 pages (small type) of Works Cited, not bad for a book under 113 pages (the majority if which are full-color slide form)! I have found all of the quotes to be given within context and immediately relative to the subject. This book has given me incredible insight into scriptures and scientific findings, bringing them together to validate each other. I started to highlight the slides I wanted to remember and found I was highlighting everything! I LOVE THIS BOOK! I have read it, re-read it, and will read it again and again.

Powerful insights into the energy around us!

This might be one of the best books I have ever purchased! To find all the quotes and scriptures she has compiled would take years and would be fruitless since she has already done all the hard work for us. This book has increased my testimony of the Atonement and God's healing powers. It explains in both a secular and spiritual way the light of Christ and supports it with teachings of modern day prophets. Thank you Tamara for making all your hard work available for others to learn from!
