The Deep-Sea Canoe: The Story of Third World Missionaries in the South Pacific, by Alan R. Tippett

This updated version of Tippett’s 1977,The Deep Sea Canoe, describes a significant but often overlooked aspect of the expansion of Christianity in the South Pacific, that of South Sea Island believers who carried the gospel from one island to another in their deep sea canoes. It is a well-researched study by one who knew the islands and their people, a man known by the Fijians as one who spoke their language.

Inspiring stories of indigenous mission
By Geoffrey Waugh
Alan Tippett gives inspiring accounts of South Pacific indigenous missionaries in the nineteenth century, especially from Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. He sums up his story with, "Here we remembered men who had sailed in the deep-sea canoe, who had met cannibalism and heathenism face to face, who had sailed through hurricanes and rescued their comrades from the oven in times of war, who took the Bible at its face value and acted on its words - men who demonstrated their faith in action" (p. 124).

Those indigenous pioneers became heralds to paramount chiefs and were leaders of missionary bands and new Christian communities. Many were martyrs, faithful servants in God's eternal kingdom. The book reads like the Book of Acts in the South Pacific.

Western pioneers such as John Hunt and Thomas Baker are woven into the story briefly, but the focus remains on the Pacific Islander missionary pioneers and church planters.

Australian missions author, Alan Tippett, lived in Fiji for 20 years and later was Senior Professor of Anthropology and Oceanic Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary from 1965-1977. He writes with missionary passion and compassion, wonderful anthropological insights, and theological depth concerning the pioneering days of the church in the South Pacific. Here is one example among many:

"The missionary or the evangelist must not destroy these idols. They are not his gods. The only man who can destroy a god or a magical object is the man who worships it. In a big movement like the one in New Guinea, when a tribe or maybe as many as 6000 people demonstrates their decision together, the act is quite complex. Who destroys the gods of the tribe at large? The man with authority over that tribe - either the priest of the Chief. ... Who destroys the family gods? The head of the family. ... Who destroys the personal gods? ... The individual whose god it is. People make their decisions in the pattern of their culture. We call this a multi-individual decision. If you go to this kind of country you will meet this kind of experience" (p. 59).

Indigenous, native missionaries understood and lived in these South Pacific cultural contexts for evangelism and church growth. This book helps you understand the wonderful acts of God through his South Pacific servant leaders.

Alan Tippett gives many examples of how the church was planted and grew through both programmed action and pentecostal experience. Again and again the Lord moved in the power of his Spirit to cause massive repentance and even protect some people from being clubbed to death. Yet, many indigenous pioneers did die violent deaths - just as in the Book of Acts.

Here is another missionary classic, inspiring and humbling. We can admire and follow the example of these island pioneers, as they loved and followed their Lord.
