Good First Arc, Brought Down by the Generic Gotham and a Rushed Emotional Evolution for Batman
By Andrew Garaventa
Tom King has a good, but not great start to the Batman title here that is mostly weighed down by a rushed ending. As with its stellar second volume (I Am Suicide), the best work being done by King at the moment is the quiet character moments. At the outset of this volume, Batman attempts to help land a crashing plane, knowing that he may lose his life in the process. The day is saved, though, by two new superheroes: Gotham and Gotham Girl. This brother/sister duo are like a second Superman and Supergirl and join Bats in his campaign to save Gotham. Bruce sees the superpowered duo as a potential out for his career as the Batman. With Superman-level powers watching over the city, Gotham won't need Batman anymore. King mines the same question Christopher Nolan did in the Dark Knight: does Gotham need Batman or does Bruce? Unfortunately, the downside is that Bats seems way too eager to trust and put his faith in Gotham and Gotham Girl. Considering how paranoid the character is often written as being, it feels too quick for him to start planning a retirement when these two show up. Also, Gotham is a very generic character. Gotham Girl at least gets a bit more to do and she strikes up a good rapport with Duke (the former would-be Robin from the bland Robin War storyline) that helps her feel like a real character. The revelation of how the pair got their powers is good, though tragic and the first part of their arc ends somewhat predictably, but with good emotional depth. The book also perfectly sets up the sequel volume in which Batman needs to hunt down the Psycho Pirate who has been taken in by Bane. The only other minor issue is that Hugo Strange appears and sends the Psycho Pirate after Gotham and Gotham Girl. While I normally love Strange and would enjoy having him in this title, his story arc sadly led to the dismal Night of the Monster Men tie-in so it was a wasted cameo.

Excellent, but...
By Kowth
A solid volume 1. In the beginning, Batman feels a little too... different from the Snyder. More focused, more savage, more emotionally compromised by the darkness he touches, and by his personal tragedies. As you acclimate to a very different Bruce Wayne from his top immediate predecessor, you come to appreciate the intent. He's set up that way for narrative reasons. This is not an excuse, but it's done effectively, so that it's easy to forgive. The twin supers story is a little too cliche, but again... effective. Easy to forgive

Batman and his merry posse
By Charlotte J.
While reading this book I felt like I was missing key information. I read the first 3 volumes of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's New 52 Batman run but never finished the series. Despite that I figured the story would explain itself and there would be nothing to worry about. I was wrong, though. New characters just show up to help Batman, who doesn't seem to have a problem with outside help. I'm used to Batman teaming up with Robin or Nightwing, hell even Superman from time to time, but in the first few pages a complete stranger comes knocking and Batman, right off the bat (Ha! Puns), decides he's his new helper.

That was odd but I was willing to excepet this and move on. But soon after Batman recruited a total stranger into his crew, two Knockoff Superman characters appear. They too want to help Batman. What does Batman do? He says yes right away. As Batman is known to do, you know, accept help from complete strangers with god like powers.

The villain (Or villains) in the story are weak. They lack the impact that the Court of Owls had. They don't particularly challenge Batman on any new level and that just makes the conflict rather dull. This first volume of this new Batman Rebirth series isn't great, nor is it terrible. This book is just in the middle. You'd be better off picking up Detective Comics Batman, though in that series as well Batman loves to team up.
