I Was Hitler's Chauffeur: The Memoir of Erich Kempka, by Erich Kempka

Erich Kempka served as Hitler’s personal driver from 1934 through to the Fhrer’s dramatic suicide in 1945. His candid memoirs offer a unique eyewitness account of events leading up to and during the war, culminating in those dark final days in the Fhrer's headquarters, deep under the shattered city of Berlin.

He begins by describing his duties as a member of Hitler’s personal staff in the years preceding the war, driving the Fhrer throughout Germany and abroad, and accompanying him to rallies. The crux of his memoirs however covers his life with Hitler in the Berlin Fhrerbunker. During this time he was responsible for a transport fleet of cars, and often drove the likes of Speer or Kesselring on inspection tours to the hot spots on the front; and in March 1945, he accompanied the Fhrer to his final front-inspection tour. Kempka was also present when news came through of Gring and Himmler’s efforts to seize power and negotiate a truce with the Western Allies.

Crucially, Kempka also witnessed Hitler’s marriage to Eva Braun, and his last dinner and personal farewell to all those present, before he and his wife committed suicide. Hitler’s final order to Kempka was that he have ready enough petrol to burn him and his wife. Under constant Soviet artillery fire, Kempke, Linge and others poured petrol over the bodies and burnt them.

The account concludes with Kempka’s hazardous escape out of a burning Berlin more than 800 km through enemy-occupied Germany, home to find his wife at BE. There he was arrested by American C.fI.C. personnel and interrogated before being sent to serve as a witness at Nuremburg.

REVIEWS

“…a very valuable memoir, giving us an insider view of Hitler's closest circles, and providing an invaluable account of the final months of the war as seen from the bunker.”

Another Bystander's Memoir as to Infamous History...
By C. B. Miller
The book is the memoir of Hitler's SS officer chauffeur, Erich Kempka. Kempka's book is easy to read and short (if one does not count the three Appendices).

It opens in February 1932, when Kempka is asked to report to Berlin without knowing what door was about to be opened for him. Kempka was from a family of ten and of Polish heritage. After school he worked as a mechanic. Kempka joined the Nazi Party in 1930 and became a chauffeur for Gauleiter Josef Terboven. He was chosen by Hitler to be a personal chauffeur starting on March 1, 1932. Kempka did not see himself as anyone special and wondered why he was chosen over a room full of others for the job.

The book then moves quickly through the years and offers only quick snap shots of moments and events. Chapter 4 is on Dr. Theodor Morell, Hitler's infamous personal physician who gave injection's of vitamins and much more dubious mixture's (although he made a favorable impression on Kempka). Chapter 5 is on Martin Bormann who everyone hated. The book in general gives a pretty good overview of Bormann. Chapter's 7 through 11 (the last one) are the most detailed and cover the last days of the Third Reich, including the death of Hitler and Eva Braun, the break-out and Kempka's escape from the clutches of Soviet troops (thanks in large part to "the humanity" of a girl). I will not write on that further as not to spoil one of the best parts of the book.

As stated above, after the memoir ends there are three Appendices. The first two are ones that provide the casual reader some background and "context" as to the "Battle of Berlin" and the end of the Third Reich. These two Appendices were written by former Waffen SS veteran Erich Kern. They were edited from the original sections by Kern (that included certain POV commentary) that was in German edition of Kempka's book as re-issued in 1975. The third Appendix is a short introduction to Christa Schroeder's memoir on Hitler, "He was My Chief".

Kempka, like Heinz Linge, had a vantage point to interact and observe Hitler (and his court) first hand and up close. And further, as with Linge's book, herein Kempka shows Hitler (and the others at court) through anecdotes and observations. The book is not meant to be a scholarly written resource as to those times and events. The portrait of Hitler is overall a sympathetic one. Hitler is shown more as a fatherly figure then a boss. Kempka comes across as very loyal, hard working and apolitical. He does not delve into any of the horrors of the Third Reich. One is left with the impression that Hitler was not as close to Kempka as Hitler was to his valet, Linge. Linge's book gives examples of private talks and discussions that are more frank then either Kempka or "Traudl" Junge (Hitler's personal secretary and author of her own memoir).

Roger Moorhouse (the author of "Killing Hitler: The Third Reich and the Plots Against the Fhrer") writes another fine introduction to this work, as he did for Linge's book. This is the first English-language translation of Kempka's book. It is one of four books of memoirs on Hitler put out in English by Frontline Books/Skyhorse Publishing. The other three being the aforementioned: "He was My Chief" by secretary, Christa Schroeder and Linge's memoir, "With Hitler to the End" (which I reviewed on Amazon and rate a 4 star work) and "The Hitler I Knew: Memoirs of the Third Reich's Press Chief" by Otto Dietrich.

Hitler's Driver and a Window to Hitler's Privacy
By R.L.
If you would like to have a non-academic encounter with Hitle's private world, without footnotes, simple and clear, this is the book.

You are not going to find apologetic explanations on why Hitler did this or that, neither you may find brainy ideas on how Hitler got to power. Simple facts of life, observations, this is all you are going to find. It is a fascinating book because it is different... and yet, there is nothing fascinating about this book had Hitler not been the individual being driven.

Easy, non-brainy reading. An antidote to academic treatises on Hitler and the Second World War.

A good book despite the subject.
By Byravan Viswanathan
Fine narration of Kempka's life with Hitler. Good reading for those who don't get enough on this whole sad subject. He is obviously a good writer assuming he wrote the text verbatim in German with the later English translation. Even though a chauffeur he was well educated. Interesting to read.
