Great new book on Gujarat

This new title covers Gujarat in great depth. It is written with well-researched knowledge of this Indian state and a sincere desire to bring it to the attention of others. The writing style is straightforward and it flows nicely. Far better than any other travel guides covering Gujarat.

Best local guide to this Indian state, by far

Here's a 400-page guide to ONLY Gujarat. Not Bombay, not Delhi, not Goa, not Rajasthan. This Indian state, which is too often dismissed by tourists as too conservative, fanatically religious, dull, crowded and polluted gets exceptional treatment here. The book sets the record straight: Gujarat is well worth your time, not just as a diversion, but as a destination. With over 50 million people, and an economy that accounts for 10% of India's total GDP, there's more to do here than anyone can possibly cover in one trip. I've been five times, for a total time of over six months, and I've not seen it all. Not even all the highlights. Gujarat is truly a country within a country. From the desert of Kutch to the exploding tropical metropolis of Surat, to the winding medieval lanes of mighty Ahmedabad, to the colonial churches of Diu, Gujarat has something, LITERALLY, for everyone.
The Indo-Islamic architecture is important, diverse and astonishing. The explosion of color found in the villages of Kutch is like a kaleidoscope. Surat, Rajkot, and Vadodora are among the fastest growing cities on earth, and are packed with ancient temples and palaces, Raj-era parks and civil structures, and modern delights. All of this is brought to you beautifully and concisely in this excellent book.
The 2007 edition of the book is available in print, and the updated 2011 edition is currently only available as an e-book. The print guide (this one) is loaded with lovely color photographs, which are (sadly) absent from the 2011 electronic edition. The book is printed on heavy, semi-gloss paper stock of high quality. It is arranged in simple geographic chapters, but with over 400 pages, it really gets down into the details you will not find in larger guides to the entire country.
The listings for food and lodging are TRULY accurate and up-to-date. Remember, Gujarat is majority vegetarian, and while not strictly a "dry" state, purchase and consumption of alcohol are tightly controlled. There are only about 25 points in the entire state where one can purchase alcohol against a government-issued permit. Plan your dining choices accordingly.

Outstanding guide for the independant traveller

This guide is similar in style to the Lonely Planet series yet focuses on a single region - Gujarat. It includes suggested itineraries, personal contacts for tour guides, eco-tours, guides for places to stay, information for train connections as well as the usual (and unusual!) sightseeing. Given that I am going to be traveling around this region alone, I am finding the guide invaluable for planning my trip. Every chapter includes a section on 'helping out' - in a country as poverty stricken as India there is a lot of help needed. The book provides charities and organizations that need volunteers so that you can lend a hand - to give as well as take from the country you are visiting. The opening chapter also includes a guide to sustainability as a tourist - take only pictures etc. and respecting cultural differences. I think the book is easily the best guide I've read for any place I've visited. I will update this review when i return and know how well their information matches up to what I find there!
