Acoustic Artistry

I have been playing for 13 years, and this book takes you to places you normally would not go. It is very gradient in the way in which you learn the techniques and advances in a way which is comfortable yet challenging. If you are up to try something different from what is "normal" for acoustic guitar this book is for you. It adds a wow factor to your playing in which you and your audience will appreciate . i highly recommend it as it is where solo guitar is going.

Beyond the standard guitar techniques.

This book extends the classical/fingerstyle techniques and does so extremely well. I do not know of any other publication that covers this material. The studies start off simple and increase in difficulty as you progress through the text. The included CD is extremely helpful in that you can hear exactly the tonality that the author is seeking. You cannot beat the price, which is very inexpensive. Evan Hirshelman is an outstanding performer, composer, and teacher...if you have the opportunity to see him in concert or attend a masterclass, you'll be impressed. He has a deep passion for the guitar and he is one of the few current composers for classical guitar whose pieces are fresh, modern, and at the same time musical (check out his CD "Water in Darkness" ). I highly recommend this book to classical guitarists or fingerstyle guitarists who wish to extend their technique beyond that commonly found in standard guitar methods and classrooms.

Nice pictures - not much else.

Large, coffee-table format book covering the Group C / World Endurance Championship from its inception in the early 1980's to its demise in the early '90s. Excellent protography, but very little technical detail. A good book to have if you're looking for "in action" images of the heyday of sports car racing in Europe, but not great if you're into the engineering aspects of the sport.

The Group C Era

The third in a series of books written by Janos Wimpffen, and published by David Bull Publishing.

Each year is covered in around 40 pages with perhaps 2 to 3 pages of text. The rest is devoted to photographs and detailed captions. Not only are the significant cars shown and described, but many unusal minor players are as well. The Group C era was an exciting era in international racing, and I am very happy with the book. It is well worth the price.

Wimpfen does a great job on this volume as he has on all of the rest. This covers the Group C, GTP era very well considering how much was going on world wide in Europe north america and Japan at the same time. Well done.

Janny de Moor is a freelance culinary writer and photographer working from 't Harde, in the Netherlands, who has written over 20 cookery books. In 2004 she won the prestigious Wina Born Award for the best culinary publication in the Netherlands. Suzanne Vandyck was born in Belgium and later moved to California, where she established Worldchefs International LLC (www.worldchefs.net). Suzanne published an international recipe book on clay cooking, Cooking for Healthy Living with Vita Clay, and has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Culinary Instructor Recognition in 2006 for ACE (Cupertino Adult and Community Education), Sunnyvale, California.

Tasty recipes for food that's sort-of not-quite familiar

I came across this cookbook while I was looking for something else on the shelves of my nearby public library. I'm familiar with most European cuisines, as I'm sure you are, but if someone offered me ten bucks for every traditional Dutch or Belgian dish, I couldn't afford the bus fare home. Hmm, mussels and frites? Beer? Chocolate? Endive? I've had a few excellent Belgian restaurant meals, though, and flipping through the cookbook in the library made me say Yum a few times. This came home with me -- and I am happy it did. Now it's in my Amazon shopping cart.

Because I'm not the only one who's ignorant of Dutch and Belgian history, its eating habits, or the evolution of its cooking (remember Dutch West Indies from school? Where do you think all those spices ended up?) I appreciated the very-readable history and overview with which the book begins.

Most of the cookbook, of course, is given over to the 150 recipes, accompanied by lots of photos. Not just the finished dish; in most cases there are also "how to make this" pictures; the book promises 750 photos, and none of them are gratuitous. If you treated this as just an "Oooh pretty" food porn book, you'd be very satisfied.

But there's no reason to stop with the pictures because the recipes are very appealing. The cookbook is organized in a familiar way: soups; appetizers; snacks and street food; fish and shellfish; poultry and game; meat; salads and side dishes; desserts and drinks; baking and breads. I'm tempted to say that it's "like" northern French or German cooking, though of course it's its own cuisine... Still, I see plenty of similarities with German food (which I love), such as the use of mustard and asparagus, and with country French food. In other words, while there are plenty of regional specialties here, you'll find most of the ingredients familiar -- and, for the most part, find-able in your local well-stocked grocery store. (Getting rabbit, pheasant, and venison is always ridiculously expensive here in the U.S. though. I'm likely to substitute chicken whenever I get around to making the "rabbit in cherry beer" recipe that's been calling to me.)

So far, I made the Flemish-style Beef Stew with Beer, which is a lot like other beef stews -- onion, beef, garlic -- but with Chimay beer (how could THAT be bad?) and, uniquely, finished off with two slices of rustic bread spread with a few tablespoons of mustard. It was a hit. I keep getting geared up to make one of the three mussel dishes listed, as soon as I can find a reliable purveyor of mussels. Let's see, shall it be the mussel soup, or steamed mussels with celery, or "mussel meal" with fennel, celery, onion, Pernod, and chervil? I also have my eye on a veal-and-prune stew with lemon; trout with almonds (which looks a lot like French recipes for the same thing); and endive, ham and cheese gratin (Hmm, I wonder what Belgian endive tastes like *cooked*?)

Without doubt, there's plenty to keep me occupied and well fed. I think you'll like this cookbook, too.

Stunningly Beautiful!

This stunningly beautiful cookbook was previously published as two separate titles: DUTCH COOKING and THE FOOD AND COOKING OF BELGIUM.
The first 45 pages contain chapters on the culinary history and culture of both regions, followed by an introduction to typical foods and beverages. Next are 200 pages of lavishly illustrated recipes (3-7 full-color photographs per recipe), a list of suppliers, and a recipe index.
The recipes are grouped as follows:

Soups (22 pages)
Appetizers (16 pages)
Snacks and Street Food (22 pages)
Fish and Shellfish Dishes (16 pages)
Poultry and Game Dishes (24 pages)
Meat Dishes (28 pages)
Salads and Side Dishes (18 pages)
Desserts and Drinks (28 pages)
Baking and Breads (30 pages)

Each recipe starts with a short paragraph placing it into its cultural context, followed by a list of ingredients. Measurements are given three different ways: metric, US standard, and volume (cups, tsp. etc), and substitutions are suggested where appropriate. Instructions are clear, and broken down into numbered steps. Each recipe fills exactly one page, thus eliminating the need to turn the page while cooking.
Having grown up in Belgium, I was thrilled to find all my favorite recipes here, such as Watercress Soup; Li�ge Waffles; Ghent-Style Chicken Stew (Waterzooi); Endive, Ham and Cheese Gratin; Flemish-Style Beef Stew with Beer; Chocolate Mousse; Dame Blanche; Tarte au Maton or Mattentaart.

This book answers the growing American interst in Belgian and Dutch cuisine. Both countries' traditions get a fair share of attention, and the recipes are do-able. This is always a problem when some ingredients may be difficult to obtain.

This is the third copy of this book I have purchased, having given away my other two, that how much I love it. Isaacson wrote an excellent biography of Franklin, one that I've reread a few times. I know the expression"like you were there" is overused but this book actually makes you feel you knew the real Franklin. I've been reading a lot about the younger Franklin recently, his time as an apprentice to his brother James, a printer, his self-education, his escape to Philadelphia, but this book presents the complete Franklin in a way thats reachable. Its not complicated reading, its an exciting story that makes you totally familiar with the man, warts and all.

An excellent biography

Benjamin Franklin was a complicated personality whose political views changed over time. Franklin used Greek Philosophy as stepping stones from which he derived his first views on politics, virtues, and moral pragmatism but he shaped and modified these views as he aged. It is probably impossible to capture the essence of Benjamin Franklin's nature but this biography does it as well as it can be done. Franklin was invaluable when it came to editing the Declaration of Independence and negotiating the post-war treaties with France and England which established the first 13 colonies as an independent nation. Franklin preached tolerance and patience to the delegates as they argued about the creation of a representative form of government for the colonies. Concise and impartial this biography credits the imaginative Benjamin Franklin with having a significant influence on American culture and politics.

Delightful Read of a Delightful Man

I loved this book. Franklin lived a interesting life, and the author tells it well. The book is full of wisdom and insight into this historic figure. Often people have limited information concerning someone's history, but the author details his story well. I really liked the character because of his diplomatic ways. He rather fought with people publicly, and would tell stories to make his points in matters of disagreement. This was not passive aggressive behavior, which numerous modern people would accuse him of, but rather he was a gentleman seeking discourse, not debate. There is a big difference. One must remember that Jesus did the same thing. Another interesting point is that Franklin spent a lot of his time in Europe. It seems odd to me that he did, and he was not much of a family man, and lacked male friendship, and perhaps had too much female friendship, though it seems through his letters, he wanted more.

Another interesting point is that his name is on all four of the founding documents of this nation of America. He was smart in dealing with people, and of course, he was a curious person, and did some science work. There is much we can learn of him, and there is much to just appreciate. He was a interesting man, and the author keeps the book interesting too.
