A new favorite

This little book is exactly what I've been wishing for! For several years, I've been a fan of Blake Snyder's _Save the Cat_ and his "beat sheet." However, StC was written for screenwriters, and some of its beats don't easily translate to novels. In this book, Gwen Hayes lays out a four-act structure and a fresh set of story beats that are specific to the romance genre. The book is concise, engaging, and useful for any subgenre. I appreciated that Hayes doesn't tailor her advice to market trends, or make assumptions about gender, sexuality, or heat level. Romance is romance. This book isn't concerned with chiseled abs or stormy eyes*; it's about the bones of writing a compelling relationship.

I know I'll be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it often.

*Not that there's anything wrong with chiseled abs or stormy eyes. Big fan of both.

A romance-specific book on plot that's concise, to the point, and hilarious.

I loved this book! It is short -- and that's a good thing. The speed with which she covers the different beats helped me get the whole movement in my head more quickly, rather than dwelling too long on each one. The music references are actually helpful too, not just funny. Although they are. :D

This book was like the missing piece to plot for me. I've always struggled with plotting -- probably because imo your average plot is relatively simple compared to when a romance is running along side it. This helped me a great deal to see a framework I could work within.

Also, I loved that this book treated the main characters as H1 and H2 and did not give them special roles relating to gender. This is not only helpful if you're hoping to write GLBT fiction, but ALSO it helps us not treat the characters in a sexist way. They're both unique characters that have traits that may or may not relate to their sex. The other romance fiction writing book I've tried to read was so weighed down with sexist ideas, I had to stop. Thank you for this book, Gwen!

Concise. Impressive. Exactly what I needed to further my romance writing.
I've been researching story structure for seven years, and there's nothing out there quite like this. Hayes impressed me so much with her concisely written, hilarious approach to structuring the romance arc, that I bough my critique partner a copy of this book the same day I read it. Like me, she's read all the gurus out there, all the authors who discuss story structure, but Hayes did something different. She divulged the secrets I need to make my romance stories resonate with readers.
Initially I thought the book was too short, but therein lies the beauty of her work.
This book is straightforward, humorous, and complete. It's a quick read, without rhetoric, equipped with real life story structure, and well-worth the money. Perfect for professionals of the romance industry.
Thank you Gwen Hayes.
I highly recommend this editor's take on romance story structure.

About the Author
Stephen Aryan was born in 1977 and was raised by the sea in northeast England. After graduating from Loughborough University, he started working in marketing, and for some reason he hasn't stopped. A keen podcaster, lapsed gamer and budding archer, when not extolling the virtues of Babylon 5, he can be found drinking real ale and reading comics.
He lives in a village in Yorkshire with his partner and two cats.

Okay book

Seriously. It was just okay. I can't understand why so many readers are giving this book five stars but, whatever. If it's the best book YOU have ever read, then good on you. For me, there were too many characters left undeveloped, nothing new with the plot or battles, and an overall sense of waiting for something to happen. And for a book that's titled battle mage, the whole magic thing seemed very weak and secondary to the book. All of that aside, it was a good enough book to read over a weekend....but I certainly don't think it deserves five stars.

A subtle an complexly woven tale

Battlemage is a well written fantasy with a familiar but distinct set of magical systems. Vargus was the standout character for me, as I always wanted to stay with his point of view. Balfruss, despite getting top billing, seemed a little under-developed, and I hope to learn more about him in later books.

My main criticism relates to the lack of insight into the thoughts of many of the characters. I would have liked to get to know some of Vargus' brothers much better. Instead I had to be satisfied with their few words and actions. They were still more engaging than the characters in 90% of modern fiction.

One final note. The spy ring sub-plot seemed a little lack-luster. There were no true threats, no highs and lows. Even the climax at the church was quickly glossed over, as if the author wasn't that interested.

Overall, this first novel by Aryan is of surprisingly high quality. I'll certainly be on the lookout for future titles.

Well written. No depth in characters. Boring story

The book is not engaging in any way. Except for the first chapter the story develops very slowly and without enough elements to keep you interested. The author keeps revealing surprises as the plot moves along but the lack of a main story and likable characters makes those efforts fruitless.

About the Author
Erik Olin Wright is arguably the most prominent scholar analyzing the social impact of class in the United States, and his research has mainly involved large-scale quantitative investigations of various themes connected to social inequality. Wright is the author of many books, including Class Counts, Interrogating Inequality, and Classes. He has also organized what he calls the “Real Utopias Project,” which explores a wide range of radical proposals for transforming the core institutions of contemporary society (and is also a series of books for Verso). In addition, he founded the A.E. Havens Center at the University of Wisconsin, whose mission is to foster dialogue between activists and academics and to encourage critical perspectives on contemporary social issues.

Joel Rogers, a MacArthur Foundation "genius" prize-winner and identified by Newsweek as one of the 100 living Americans most likely to shape U.S. politics and culture in the twenty-first century, is professor of law, political science, public affairs, and sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The common thread in his academic work is democracy: how to define and measure it, what makes it work, how to make it work better. Rogers spends a lot of time outside the university advising people in politics, government, business, and social movements. Loved it unexpectedly!

I had to purchase this for my intro to sociology class. Although I wasn't excited about having to take the class overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this book was to read! It's filled with incredibly interesting statistics and U.S. history that you don't need to be a sociologist to understand and appreciate. Everything was very up to date as well, which is important since politics and society is so dynamic. Usually I'm chomping at the bit to sell back my textbooks, but I liked this one so much I decided to keep it!

Did not think that textbooks were allowed to be so visibly biased toward certain viewpoints. This book is incredibly biased toward the left and even comes out and says so in the first chapter. Pretty disappointing that my university allows this book to be used for classes.

I am really trying to learn different stuff as my way of improving myself so I try to learn things that I have really zero knowledge and hope that I can be good with it. I know that sooner my memory will not be as good as when I was younger and I feel that this is the best time to learn new things when I am still able.

The book is very good in a sense that as a newbie in this course I was able to grasp the concept but I know that I have lots to learn still. Anyways, all I am after it at least know a thing or two about it and maybe progress little by little.

Jonah Berger is a professor at the Wharton School of Business. He dropped two books last year, about a month apart, with this one I'm reviewing and Invisible Influence. His work reminds me a little of Malcolm Gladwell and he even references The Tipping Point early in the book.

These kind of books, where the author presents anecdotal evidence and real life stories to illustrate points, are fun to read for me as I enjoy when the author helps you relate with the "stories" presented to validate a point.

Jonah writes to inform us of why things catch on. We see this quite a bit with things going "viral" with social media, but he goes deeper than just the social media aspect of contagiousness.

He provides an easy to follow acronym for outlining what items can help something catch on. This acronym is STEPPS and the books is divided into 6 chapters describing each of the elements. They are as follows:

Social Currency - Being "in-the-know" on something and wanting to share it with others.

Triggers - How one thing will instantly trigger a thought of something else. Peanut butter makes you think of jelly. Coffee and donuts go together, etc.

Emotion - When something inspires us and evokes emotion, we are often inspired to share. Some feelings are more prone to sharing like humor, awe, excitement, and on the negative side, anger and anxiety.

Public - Summed up as social proof. Two restaurants with same cuisine and one has a line out the door and the other one is practically empty. Where would you like dine?

Practical Value - Information that is useful is far more likely to be shared.

Stories - When a good story is told, it will often suck us in, evoke emotion, and prompt us to want to share.

I thought the book was entertaining but didn't really feel like there was anything revolutionary about the content. Jonah Berger's Contagious is a fascinating read. Not only is the book packed with entertaining examples of viral campaigns, but each is backed with painstaking analysis into the science of social transmission. What you end up with is a veritable blueprint for creating ideas, campaigns and messages that spread like wildfire.
There are six essential factors that contribute to contagious ideas, shows Jonah, and a quick look at some of the most successful viral campaigns reveals each of them at work:

Social currency. We share things that make us look good or help us compare favorably to others. Exclusive restaurants utilize social currency all the time to create demand.

Triggers. Ideas that are top of mind spread. Like parasites, viral ideas attach themselves to top of mind stories, occurrences or environments. For example, Mars bar sales spiked when in 1997 when NASA's Pathfinder mission explored the red planet.

Emotion. When we care, we share. Jonah analyzed over six months of data from the New York Times most emailed list to discover that certain high arousal emotions can dramatically increase our need to share ideas - like the outrage triggered by Dave Carroll's "United Breaks Guitars" video.

Public. People tend to follow others, but only when they can see what those others are doing. There is a reason why baristas put money in their own tip jar at the beginning of a shift. Ideas need to be public to be copied.

Practical. Humans crave the opportunity to give advice and offer tips (one reason why advocate marketing works - your best customers love to help out), but especially if they offer practical value. It's why we `pay it forward' and help others. Sharing is caring.

Stories - People do not just share information, they tell stories. And stories are like Trojan horses, vessels that carry ideas, brands, and information. About the Author

Graham MacKay is a consultant colorectal surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with an interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques. He qualified from Glasgow University where he also undertook a postgraduate MD degree in the field of perioperative care. During his training he carried out an Ethicon laparoscopic fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery as well as spending time at the Lahey Clinic in Boston and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He has a keen interest in academic surgery and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Glasgow University. He is also the Director of Surgical Education at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Patrick O'Dwyer qualified from the University College Cork, Ireland in 1979. He subsequently worked at Cork University Hospital before travelling to Columbus, Ohio to work as a Clinical Fellow in Ohio State Hospital.
Thereafter he trained in a number of hospitals in Dublin before taking up his current NHS post in Glasgow.
His major interests include laparoscopic and hernia surgery and surgical oncology including colorectal and sarcoma surgery. He also has a major interest in ongoing clinical research.


Mr Richard Molloy qualified from the University College Cork, Ireland in 1986. He commenced his training at Cork University Hospital prior to travelling to Boston to work in surgical research at Harvard University.
He subsequently trained in Glasgow and Edinburgh before travelling again to the United Sates to work as a Clinical Fellow at The Cleveland Clinic before taking up his current NHS post in Glasgow.
His major interests include hernia surgery, laparoscopic surgery and open and laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.

The World Trembled

THis is an amazing piece of literature that reviews the entire military history of Japan in the late 30's through WWII. Extremely thorough.

WHat struck me most was the first hand accounts of the depth of suffering that both sides experienced. It is truly a tragedy that so many good men died - all with great loyalty and courage and way too many with untold agony that most of us could not even imagine. It also gives an amazing insight into the Japanese mind and an understanding of why events unfolded as they did in the Pacific Theater.

The most appreciated knowledge though that this book imparts is an understanding of how the post war experience was handled by the US with great intelligence and understanding to allow the Japanese Culture to continue to flourish and become one of the major democracies - building a better world for all of us out the ashes of this most terrible time in the worlds history.

About the Author

Herb Cohen has been called "the world's best negotiator." He's internationally renowned as a corporate and governmental consultant on negotiating strategy, commercial dealings and crisis management. As a U.S. presidential advisor, he has helped to formulate policy on hostage negotiations and terrorism. He is president of the Power Negotiations Institute in Northbrook, IL.

Examples showing up the book's age

Fundamentally I guess negotiations dont change, Time, Information, Power - the subject he talks about are still relevant. Most of the examples seem dated though, Carter and Nixon are talked about a lot, along with Soviet style negotiation.

More importantly today's consumers have a wealth of information on the internet so his example of people buying a fridge spending a lot of time researching prices at other shops seems a bit obsolete.

Finally I don't like a lot of his attitude. He's surprised that people check out on time - "just because some little sign says so". He suggests spending multiple hours and visits with a salesman so that he's invested and you can wrangle a few more bucks off the price. really?

So its worth a quick read if you can pick it up second hand for next to nothing. Its not worth the $7 I paid.

I've taught classes on Negotiation and read many books as preparation. There is nothing better. This isn't clinical or condescending and Mr. Cohen's anecdotes will have the reader laughing. This book has had a greater impact on my career than any book I've read.

As the title indicates, this book is about negotiation, which the author defines as: "What is negotiation? It is the use of information and power to affect behavior within a "web of tension." If you think about this broad definition, you'll realize that you do, in fact, negotiate all the time both on your job and in your personal life." Herb then summarizes the three pillars of negotiation, the main premise of the book: "In every negotiation in which you're involved--in every negotiation in which I'm involved--in fact, in every negotiation in the world (from a diplomatic geopolitical negotiation to the purchase of a home)--three crucial elements are always present: 1. Information. The other side seems to know more about you and your needs than you know about them and their needs. 2. Time. The other side doesn't seem to be under the same kind of organizational pressure, tune constraints, and restrictive deadlines you feel you're under. 3. Power. The other side always seems to have more power and authority than you think you have."

1- "Within reason, you can get whatever you want if you're aware of our options, if you test your assumptions, if you take shrewdly calculated risks based on solid information, and if you believe you have power. "

2- "You have more power sources at your fingertips than you realize! 1. The power of competition...2. The power of legitimacy. Legitimacy can be questioned and challenged. Use the power of legitimacy when it's advantageous for you to do so and challenge that power when ifs advantageous for you to do so...3. The power of risk taking You must be willing to take risks while negotiating. Risk taking involves mixing courage with common sense...4. The power of commitment...By syndicating your risk you put yourself in a position to exploit the favorable opportunity because the risk is only moderate for you...5. The power of expertise...Establish your background and credentials early in he confrontation. If you do, your statements may not even t challenged. In other words, cash in on the fact that in complicated negotiations, participants often lack specialized knowledge of certain aspects of the matter being discussed...6. The power of the knowledge of "needs" for: for: 1. The specific issues and demands, which are stated openly. 2. The real needs of the other side, which are rarely verbalized...7. The power of investment...My point is this: If you have something difficult to negotiate--an emotional issue, or a concrete item that can be stated numerically, such as price, cost, interest rate, or salary-cope with it at the end of a negotiation, after the other side has made a hefty expenditure of energy and a substantial time investment...8. The power of rewarding or punishing...If I'm aware of your perceptions and needs, and if I know you think I have power over you, I can control your behavior...9. The power of identification...You will maximize your negotiating ability if you get others to identify with you...10. The power of morality...11. The power of precedent...12. The power of persistence...Persistence is to power what carbon is to steel. By gnawing through a dike long enough even a rat can drown a nation. Most people aren't persistent enough when negotiating...13. The power of persuasive capacity...even if you present me with overwhelming evidence that I understand, should the conclusion depress me, I will remain unconvinced. Your facts and logic may be unassailable, but their acceptance will not meet my existing needs and desires...14. The power of attitude...Try to regard all encounters and situations, including your job, as a game, as the world of illusion. Pull back a little and enjoy it all."

3- "1. Since most concession behavior and settlements will occur at or even beyond the deadline, be patient. True strength often calls for the ability to sustain the tension without flight or fight. Learn to keep your automatic defense responses under control. Remain calm but keep alert for the favorable moment to act. As a general rule, patience pays. It may be that the thing 5 do, when you do not know what to do, is to do nothing. 2. In an adversary negotiation your best strategy is not to reveal your real deadline to the other side. Always keep in mind that since deadlines are the product of a negotiation they are more flexible than most people realize. the benefits and detriments that will ensue as you approach, or go beyond, the brink.3. The "other side," cool and serene as they may appear. always have a deadline. Most often, the tranquility they display outwardly masks a great deal of stress and pressure. 4. Precipitous action should be taken only when ifs guaranteed to be to your advantage. Generally speaking you cannot achieve the best outcome quickly; you can achieve it only slowly and perseveringly. Very often as you approach the deadline a shift of power will occur, presenting a creative solution or even a turnaround by the other side. The people may not change, but with the passage of tune, circumstances do."

4- "Watch the increments of concession behavior, since they send a strong message about the real limits of authority."

5- "A negotiation is more than an exchange of material obj« It is a way of acting and behaving that can develop understanding, belief, acceptance, respect, and trust. It is the manner of your approach, the tone of your voice, the attitude you convey, the methods you use, and the concern you exhibit for the other side's feelings and needs. All these things comprise the process of negotiation. Hence, the way you go about trying to obtain your objective may in and of itself meet some of the other party's needs."

6- "Let me now elaborate on how the negotiating process and reconciling opponent's needs can be used to bring about collaborative Win-Wm outcomes: I. Using the process to meet needs 2. Harmonizing or reconciling needs...In general, the reason we are at odds on an issue may stem from three areas of difference: 1. Experience 2. Information 3. Role...3. Role...Successful collaborative negotiation lies in finding out what the other side really wants and showing them a way to get it, while you get what you want."

7- "Accomplishing mutual satisfaction using the collaborative Win-Win style involves emphasis on three important activities: 1. Building trust 2. Gaining commitment 3. Managing opposition."

8- "How can you ensure that you do not make visceral opponents? My two rules are stated in terse negative terms: 1. Never forget the power of your attitude 2. Never judge the actions and motives of others."

9- "Much like a great chess master, a winning negotiator needs to know every possible strategy from the opening gambit to the end-game play. Then he can enter the event with confidence that he is prepared for every possible eventuality that might occur. Nonetheless, he strives for the best outcome that can give everyone what he wants.
