Too Often Drifts Into Bleak Reality

Much of WTF is really very funny. The section on Telemarketers had be laughing in the middle of the night. But Gregory too often drifts into bleak reality. I just re-read the section on Dieting, and unfortunately Greg got serious and talked about obesity in America. It's a valid issue, but when I'm reading a book for laughs I want to laugh.

So take caution when laying down money for WTF. It's not anything like I Hate Everybody or I Hate Everything, which are just lists of annoying things and won't make you actually think when you're up with insomnia from the headache that followed you into the middle of the night.

Just so you know.

Update An Hour Later: Okay. I just dumped one of the stars I originally gave this book. I taught Drama and Scriptwriting most of my adult life, and actors and (oh jeez) scriptwriters can be most arrogant and rude people if they aren't really into the craft and only want to be famous. But you just don't insult them while you're trying to both teach and entertain them. The author of WTF continually insults the reader, calling him or her "fat ass" or "pig" or whatever. Insults aren't funny. They're rude and mean and make me hate the author.

I hate you, Gregory Bergman. If you don't believe me, come on over and my baby Browning and I will give you a much-needed etiquette lesson.

In these essays, which range widely but mostly focus on the relationships between biology and human behavior, hard and intricate science is handled with a deft touch that makes it accessible to the general reader. In one memorable piece, Sapolsky compares the fascination with tabloid TV to behavior he's observed among wild African baboons. "Rubber necks," notes the professor, "seem to be a common feature of the primate order." A sparkling set of essays by MacArthur awardee Sapolsky (Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, 1993; Biology and Neuroscience/Stanford), who is not at all afraid to go out on a (primate) limb to discuss biology, brain, and behavior. As a veteran baboon watcher, he has much to say on stress and hormones, adolescence, and other fascinating topics. In some essays he is merely out to set the record straight. So we learn in the title essay that higher testosterone levels do not increase aggression, but that aggression increases testosterone levels. Even if you give massive amounts of hormone to a monkey who, let us say, is number three in a dominance hierarchy, he will tyrannize numbers four and five but still kowtow to the two above him. Other baboon-based essays become springboards for discussion of commonalities between them and us, for example, in voyeurism: Baboons like to watch, too. They are easy targets for junk food, and adolescence is a markedly stress-filled period in which male baboons appear to be programmed to leave the troop and join another, invariably as low man on the totem pole. In other essays Sapolsky makes perturbing leaps: Are the sundry neurological disorders he glibly describes (epilepsy, Huntington's disease, Tourette's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder) truly representative of a continuum of behavior? Are the founders and leaders of religion ``schizotypal'' personalities? Arguable, certainly, but always interesting. Elsewhere Sapolsky, who summers in Kenya, writes of the predicament of the African middle class- -infatuated with Western diets and cultures while trapped in the persistent rhythms of the old ways. In the end it is the refreshing honesty of this scientist- teacher, his zeal to speculate as well as to clearly present the facts, that engages the reader. A great collection of essays by a brilliant writer

Is it possible for a man who has won a MacArthur genius grant to be underappreciated? Reading this set of essays I have to wonder why Sapolsky is not as widely read and commented on as Dawkins, Sacks, Gleick and those other few at the absolute pinnacle of popular science writing.

The tales here cover his familiar subjects: the mind and emotions (one is tempted to say the soul), stress and our reactions, and how brain chemistry effects us every day. He also relates anecdotes from his baboon observations, and in the most touching essay talks about his father's life and death. The essays are gathered from several years and several magazines and each stands on its own...there is no particular theme beyond the aforementioned subject matter. The best is probably about how we sometimes take on the identity of another: illustrated by an anecdote where he watched Stephen Hawking give a lecture "through" the voice and body of a vigorous young graduate student, and Sapolsky's own odd reaction to his father's death. It is interesting, mildly disturbing and raises some ideas about individuality I certainly had never considered. In another essay, Sapolsky describes why so many illnesses have the same symptoms (its because it is our own immune systems that make us feel so crummy). Elsewhere he draws parallels betweens kids going off to college and male baboons switching tribes, and in yet another essay compares aging in baboons and humans.

So, should you read this book?

"Yes", if you have read other Sapolsky books and are looking for more.

"Yes", if you have heard about Sapolsky and want an introduction before diving into one of the larger works (though I still think 'A Primate's Memoir' is the best place to start).

"Yes", if you are interested in the brain and/or like good science writing.

Brain food from a fantastic teacher...

The same qualities that make Sapolsky one of the most popular teachers at Stanford come through in his writing. Although I was an English major, I took his human behavioral biology class because the man has a well-deserved reputation for being entertaining and thought-provoking. If you attend one of his lectures, you'll find students from all disciplines, all wide-awake. Sapolsky makes the biology of the human condition come to life without compromising the integrity of its scientific underpinnings. This book is especially recommended to those with an interest in biology or psychology, but the appeal is universal.

A marvelous read to squeeze between scholarly articles

Robert Sapolsky has written a wonderful, fun and terribly informative book, and it's a lovely break to anyone who wants to put their endocrinology articles aside for a night and read something a little smoother. I loved "Curious George's Pharmacy" so much I devoted a day in my Great Apes syllabus to a discussion of pharmacognacy and assigned that chapter as a reading. I also quite enjoyed the last chapter on the "heterozygote's advantage" of schizotypal disorder as the root of major world religions (and read the bit about Martin Luther's clear obsessive-compulsive behaviors aloud to my boyfriend, where we both got a good gasp and a laugh). As an anthropologist and a student of primate endocrinology myself, I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the biological basis of human behavior.

Well-Done Study of the Use of Deuteronomy in Hebrews

In this reworking of his doctoral dissertation (at the University of Edinburgh), Allen examines the relationship between the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy and the New Testament letter to the Hebrews.

Recognizing the avalanche of secondary literature on the New Testament’s use of the Old Testament, Allen pursues a specific avenue of inquiry: “the way in which an individual OT book functions corporately within the letter” (4). So, Allen examines the use of Deuteronomy in the letter, “attempting to discern how the latter’s various OT motifs might contribute to a ‘Deuteronomic’ reading of the letter” (4). Allen’s approach is “intertextual in a broad, though not unlimited sense” (15). He limits his scope to “that exchange between the textual worlds created by Deuteronomy and Hebrews” (15). In particular, Allen argues that it is “perfectly possible that the author’s choice of OT materials (quotations, allusions, echoes, characters, themes et al) are not merely an apologetic or coincidental proof texts, but rather corporately reconstruct a familiar OT narrative that serves the author’s hortatory purpose” (4).

This statement indicates two areas that make Allen’s study a unique contribution. First, Allen examines the use of individual citations of Deuteronomy but also couples that with an analysis of the impact of the book as a whole on the writer’s argument. Second, Allen seeks to uncover the effect and impact of Deuteronomy on the exhortation sections of the letter. Following broadly George Guthrie’s insight that there are discernible strands of both exposition and exhortation in the letter, Allen assesses the use of the Old Testament in these particular sections (see 12-15). These exhortation sections sometimes do not receive as much intertextual analysis as the exposition sections (e.g., the Christological development of Heb 1:1-14).

In his study of Deuteronomy, as well, Allen focuses on the “Deuteronomic paraenetic material” that has a “life of its own distinct from the legal corpus” (13). Allen argues in this regard that “the vast majority of connections between the two texts are found within their respective hortatory material” (13). Accordingly, one of Allen’s central contributions is to bring together a close study of the use of the Old Testament in the letter (with an emphasis on the book of Deut) with an extended analysis of the exhortation sections of both writings.

To demonstrate the reality of this inner-biblical connection, Allen examines the various ties that bind these books together. In chapter two, Allen provides a study of the text and function of the Song of Moses in Deut 32. This is a strategic text within the scope of Deuteronomy, and it also has an “independent existence” as a well-cited often “sung” text in the history of Israel/Judaism.

In chapter three, Allen examines the Deteronomic quotations, strong allusions, echoes, and narrative allusions in Hebrews. He identifies 6 quotations, 6 strong allusions, 5-6 echoes, and 3 narrative allusions to the text of Deuteronomy. The song of Moses in Deut 32 is referred to at least 8 times. Moses’ song, though, also provides a particularly prominent theological and conceptual backdrop to the exhortation sections of the letter. As Allen writes, “this impressive and consistent textual use of Deuteronomy suggests that Hebrews has reflected upon its source text’s narrative situation in order both to shape its hortatory purpose and to articulate evocatively the consequences of apostasy” (109).

Alongside these strong textual links, there are also a number of other features that coordinate Deuteronomy and Hebrews. In chapter four, Allen highlights three major themes that are prominent in both texts: the centrality of “covenant,” the blessing/cursing imagery, and the focus and appeal to the “land.” In chapter five, Allen uncovers the “homiletical affinities” between Hebrews and Deuteronomy (156ff). The homiletic shaping of Hebrews indicates that “its argument mirrors that of its Deuteronomic source” (198). The story of Deuteronomy, then, is “replayed within the [New Covenant] context of Hebrews” (198).

In chapter six, Allen brings his argument to a climax by examining “re-presentation” in both Deuteronomy and Hebrews. After laying the exegetical (chap 3), thematic (chap 4), and rhetorical (chap 5) groundwork, Allen here constructs his climactic intertextual insight. The book of Deuteronomy, and in particular Deut 28-34, is designed to interpret and “re-present” Israel’s history. This re-presentation is for the purpose of persuading contemporary readers that the Mosaic covenant is obsolete and a new covenant is needed. The audience, then, is poised on the threshold of an entirely new way of relating to God as his covenant people. The “situational relationship” between the respective audiences is “the common Deuteronomy-Hebrews thread, with both audiences positioned at the critical moment of decision at the threshold of their inheritance” (203).

Accordingly, Hebrews not only cites and draws themes from Deuteronomy. Rather, Hebrews appropriates an entire complex of features (audience, purpose, literary type, and method) from Deuteronomy. The frequent engagement with the final chapters of Deut is not an accident; rather, “it happens consistently through the letter’s hortatory material, gives collective explanatory power to the epistle's admonitions, and in toto composes a perspective of new covenant handover at the threshold of the land” (225). In other words, these two books share a wide interpretive horizon, and they invite their readers to join them there.

For good reason, Allen’s volume has impacted the discussion of Hebrews’ use of the Old Testament. As noted above, Allen’s work provides a fresh impetus for interpreters to consider the role of the Pentateuch’s narratives in the coherence and artistry of the exhortation sections of the letter. Further, in addition to the helpful exegesis of intertextual links, the most important contribution of this work is the way it is able to account for the non-citational uses of Deuteronomy within the letter.

Allen’s overarching thesis and many of his textual connections still need to be examined, re-evaluated, and further developed; however, he has skillfully set these two biblical books in relation to one another and has compellingly demonstrated that this particular construal is not arbitrary but rather a profoundly text-immanent feature.

A gritty dark fantasy

A Dance of Cloaks is the fourth book I've read by David Dalglish. While I liked his other books a lot, I felt with them that there was something missing to make them 5-star books. That's not the case with A Dance of Cloaks. In this book, he's come into his own and A Dance of Cloaks is an exciting read. I've always said that Dalglish writes some of the best fight scenes I've ever read, and that doesn't change in this book. Added to the mix is plenty of intrigue and a large cast of characters, including some old favorites. The theme of redemption is still laced throughout the book.

If you've read and liked Dalglish's Half-Orc series, you've really got to read this - you'll learn a good bit about the politics of the world and also find out how Haern got his start as well as the Eschatons. A Dance of Cloaks stands fully on its own, though -- don't worry if you haven't read Dalglish's other books; you don't need to in order to dive right in. If you enjoy fantasy, I can't recommend this book enough.

A Wild Ride Through a Dark World

In A Dance of Cloaks David Dalglish has created a dark world where life is easily lost and swords and daggers rule. I don't normally read fantasy, but decided to broaden my horizons with this book. I'm glad I did. I don't want to post any spoilers, so I'll simply say the main plot was between a father and son. Thren Felhorn would stop at nothing to bend his son to his will and make him into a heartless assassin and the next ruler of the thieves guilds. Sub-plots involved a variety of other characters vying for money or power. There are also two very different religions struggling to win the people to their respective beliefs.

The action scenes--and there are many--are so well-written that I could easily imagine myself observing as if from a nearby vantage point. But not too nearby--the vivid battle and torture descriptions are not for the squeamish.

The main characters are portrayed with depth and feeling and each is given a story that we follow throughout the book. I especially liked that the women were strong characters and some of them could fight as well as or better than the men.

All the action and conflict lead to a climactic event when Thren Felhorn, ruler of the thieves, attempts to wipe out the opposition and finally take control of everything. Some of the characters live and some die violently, but loose ends are tied up in a dramatic battle that overtakes the city.

Highly recommended.

Lackluster and violent

So... some background. I'd been away from fantasy for awhile, until I picked up Name of the Wind. It was fantastic, and I devoured it. Then I picked up Lies of Locke Lamora, and I was pretty unimpressed by the first few chapters, but then it grew on me and I loved it. I read its sequel Red Seas under Red Skies next, and loved it just about as much.

When I picked up Dance of Cloaks, I felt the same way about it at first as I did about Lies of Locke Lamora, and I really hoped it would grow on me too. Unfortunately it just never really rang true with me. The plot is difficult to follow for the first few chapters, since every couple of pages tends to introduce a new character. These characters tend to have a great deal of similarity... they're all more or less violent, vengeful, and skilled at some form of combat. Once you have the characters and plotlines sorted out, it's difficult to sympathize with any of them, even (what I believe to be) the main character. The ending was sudden, and I felt like very little had actually been accomplished.

On the positive side, it's not a mentally difficult read. The world and social structure it creates are both fascinating and detailed. It also doesn't have the pretentiousness of a great many of the books that I've read. I genuinely believe that there's a lot of potential here, but it just didn't quite hit the right note for me.

In short, is it a match for Name of the Wind or Lies of Locke Lamora? Not quite, in my mind. Is it better than most similar books out there? Yes indeed.

A director by training (Doctor of Fine Arts, Yale Drama School), Cohen has staged thirteen professional productions at the Utah and Colorado Shakespeare Festivals, plus well over a hundred productions at Stages Theatre Center (Hollywood), Virginia Museum Theatre (Richmond), Theatre 40 (Beverly Hills), Image Theatre (Boston), Summer Repertory Theatre (Santa Rosa), the Medieval Drama Project (Irvine), the Manhattan Theatre Source, various universities, and several operas, videos and films. In addition to Theatre and Theatre: Brief Edition, he is also the author of many theatre books, including Acting One, Advanced Acting, Acting in Shakespeare, Acting Professionally, Acting Power, More Power to You, Giraudoux: Three Faces of Destiny, Creative Play Direction, and two dramatic anthologies. His essays have appeared in Theatre Journal, Theatre Topics, Theatre Forum, Theatre Survey, Modern Drama, Theater der Zeit, Essays in Theatre, On Stage Studies, The Drama Review, Contemporary Literature, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Slavic and East European Performance, Experiment and Innovation, and Dramatic Theory and Criticism. Cohen's play, The Prince, published by Dramatic Publishing Company, has been professionally produced in Long Beach, Pittsburgh, Budapest, and in staged readings in New York and Los Angeles; his dramatic translations (The Bourgeois Gentleman, The Misanthrope, Clizia, Tibi's Law) and opera translations (The Magic Flute, Carmen) have been both produced and published widely. For the past twenty years, Cohen has been the Southern California drama critic for Plays International, reviewing over two hundred plays. In 1999, he received the national Career Achievement award from ATHE - the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.

fun and easy!

Easy to read and even fun! Has quotes from famous actors and actresses from today as well as from long past! Has great exercises that help an actor's progression in the art. The book also explains the reasons behind each exercise in case one is interested in the "whys?" Other than that, it is really an enjoyable read!

Very good tool for Intro to Acting teachers!

As a novice Intro to Acting teacher, I borrowed this book from my colleague's shelf to assist me with ideas for class. It has a lot of very good ideas for games and strategies for teaching the tools of acting (ojectives, tactics, etc.)! I also find it has some strategies that I find too abstract as a teacher, and I don't think my students would comprehend and work with well. In the end, I have used this book A LOT to assist me with finding my own strategies and processes for teching beginning actors. A great tool for every acting teacher's library!

Excellent Contra Investment Educational Book

The Tao is a book that gives no secret way to investment success. What it does do is describe the brain's two sides and how they interact and provide the individual with useful knowledge. The author contends that western society places too much emphasis on left brain thinking.....and that is true. The race with the Russians to the moon due to Sputnik is an example of western left brain emphasis. The author spends a lot of pages going over the brain halves....perhaps too many pages. Still, the author shows by past Market history examples, the failings of sole left brain thinking. I, now sitting in the cart (age 62....drawing Social Security), witnessed many of the investment failures covered by the author. The book gives the reader examples to work to show their lack of right brain thinking. For any Investor that puts time and effort into their investments, the book is well worth reading to learn that everything you read from others could easily be too much tainted by their left brain. Be careful (& cautious) of those with elaborate spreadsheets and market research by big investment firms......is what I got out of this book.

About the Author

TOM REILLY is a member of the Directors Guild of America and has worked in the motion picture industry for the past thirty years. Veteran of more than forty films, Reilly worked with Woody Allen on classics such as Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Bullets Over Broadway, Hannah and Her Sisters, Purple Rose of Cairo, and Zelig. He has also been assistant director on other major motion pictures such as Big, The Prince of Tides, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Pick-up Artist, Sabrina, and Great Expectations. He is married, has three children, and lives in Westchester County, New York.

Eric Lax is dead-on right. Author Tom Reilly, who has worked on more than 40 films as an assistant director and associate producer, has given film students and those of us who just love to watch films an invaluable guide as to how a film ends up on a screen. Just read the titles of some of his chapters:
1. Learn the vocabulary of film. 2. Learn the language of the set. 3. Pick your ten best shots. 20. Face the realties of the budget. Even fifty million won't seem like enough. 37. Assume nothing. 41. The set has chemistry: Big egos...Big money....Big art. 45. Sweat the small stuff--routinely. and the last chapter 50. Always have a nice lunch.(Ya gotta read this chapter alone several times if you're "in the biz" or plan to be!) The chapters are all fast-paced and bring us right on the set with Tom. His spot on behind-the-camera descriptions of film industry folks just sweeps you along into his world.

This should be a must read for all film school students. It is one of the few film books I've read that really brings the day-to-day details of making a picture (egos and union issues included!)to one's brain cells. The individual experiences really impart mental picture lessons that a student will never forget.

I originally bought it for my daughter who is in film school, but I'm keeping it for my own 'film-buff' library and buying another copy for her, my budding film-industry-worker-to-be!

Great, Practical Tips From a Pro

For those of you currently making films or planning to make them soon, this book is a VERY helpful list of pointers on how to approach the topics of filmmaking. Some tips tend to apply more toward million-dollar pictures, but almost all of the information in here can be applied to a low or no-budget film when you scale down the message. I've read too many filmmaking books to count and sometimes you feel you've read just about all there is to say. In this case, listening to a professional who isn't a major, known director gives a much different and valuable approach to filmmaking that you wouldn't normally get from a book written by your favorite director. Some books talk about how to get the great shots and cast the right mood but this book forces you to ask yourself how much will the shot really cost and can I do it a better way with a small budget. Sometimes, that's just as important.

Highly informative - and quite amusing! A must for anyone involved in any aspect of making films. Also a truly enjoyable read for the layman. Broken down into short, easily understood topics - each shedding light on a separate aspect of movie-making.
Tom Reilly is a graduate of Harvard College. Upon graduation he applied for one of the Directors Guild of America's highly coveted trainee positions. He succeeded in securing one, fulfilling his desire for a career in which he would not have to wear a tie to work!
Glad he did. This book is just great!

Jones is an interculturalist who understands the complexities faced by individuals, businesses, and organizations when engaged in international and cross-cultural work. Jones has experience in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and with multiple subcultures in the United States. He holds an MA in Intercultural Relations from The University of the Pacific in conjunction with the Intercultural Communication Institute.

Culture Shock and What to do about it

The "Practical Interculturalist's Guidebook to: Transitions Across Cultures" is as promised: a brief, clear explanation of what to expect when moving into another culture - useful both for the person going, as well as the family, friends or people responsible for the one going.

The book is a list of 23 Big Ideas, which are good advice packages, distributed over 5 chapters with practical examples in between. The introduction makes the standard case for why this is important, with the exception of one rather shocking example that does not fit the tone of the rest of the book. With the basics established, the author moves on to explain the phases of culture shock in each successive chapter and give useful suggestions on how to deal with it. To my delight, he includes a chapter on Reentry, which is all too often forgotten even though it has potentially as beneficial or dire consequences as moving abroad.

Based on the title, I expected the book to be heavy on tips and to do's, and it is indeed full of great advice such as, don't just be yourself, or begin with the endings - list five things that end with the move. However, it also includes a fair amount of theory presented in simple terms and examples. This gives the reader some understanding of underlying theories and concepts so that they can apply it in other settings and/or take it further and come up with their own practical applications.

The content shows a clear sense of being based on a good combination of personal experiences and acknowledged experts. It is written in casual American English and seems most aimed at college students. For readers whose first language is not English, the occasional jargon or metaphor, such as "ballpark estimates" and "stuff," might leave them a bit lost, but it is otherwise easily understood.

Lastly, that this is an e-book is in itself very practical - lightweight to take with you means it makes an easy journey companion, and easy to reference at each stage of your transition.

A Crucial Map for Travelers

Stephen Jones has done a superb job of giving the intercultural traveler a crucial map for better navigating, understanding, and appreciating the process of going to and being in an unfamiliar place. In just under one hundred pages, the book is easy to read, understand, and carry along. It exposes the reader to helpful tips that most of us don't know that we don't know...until we've learned the hard way.

This little book is power-punched with practical steps to help the traveler process and integrate new understandings of self and others that could mean the difference between a good experience and a bad one; between making long-lasting and resilient friendships or living with confusing and disappointing connections.

Having traveled and lived in other cultures and having trained others to travel and live abroad, I find this book very helpful. In this global village in which we now find ourselves, almost everyone will find this an invaluable read. I look forward to more in this series, where we will no doubt be given further information about things like finding a cultural guide and learning to recognize and incorporate cultural cues.

I found this book to be an insightful analysis of the challenges that face those who live and move between different cultures.
As a parent of one who lives in another country and travels back and forth annually, I found it helpful for those who love and care about such a sojourner. It sheds light on communication and behavioral patterns that are sometimes confusing.
