Excellent Undergraduate Textbook for computer hardware

An excellent book, very complete and very detailed. Mostly well written and clear. It explains MC68K and Power PC archtiectures. It is very indepth when it comes to microprogramming. A good overview of Assembly concepts. You will learn about microprocessors inside out, including Intel Pentium family with superscalar features and the importance of pipelining and compiler optimization. A great reference for profesionals, a superb guide for undergrads.

Excellent undergraduate text

This was the assigned text for my junior year computer engineering course on computer organization. I loved it. The explanations are clear, progress logically, and are clearly presented. I find myself picking it up from time to time, both to read the more advanced chapters out of personal interest and to look up details needed in more advanced coursework.

Lucid and Timeless

A clearly written book, which employs a simple language. Another beauty of the book is that all loose ends are tied up. As sentences unfold one will realize why a particular phrase was used earlier and so on. That makes a big difference for an engineering text book.

It is the best book that I know for fundamentals. Hence, it will be useful for years to come.

Must have for all embedded systems people.

MUST HAVE

I graduated college with a 3.2 GPA. I was a hard working and loved nursing. I took a Kaplan course the week after I graduated. I did 1,000s of question on Kaplan. Took my test- 265 question and failed! I was crushed. Used Kaplan again. studied hard. test #2, 143 questions, failed. At a loss, I bought a Lippincott book. Had only Q&A, no content. Did over 1/2 the book and took the test again. test #3, 265 questions and failed.

At a complete loss, I researched what i should do. I was certain i was never going to pass. I was studying so hard and could not seem to pass the test. I bought this book on amazon and fell in love with it from the very beginning. Each chapter had 10-30 pages of content and then questions pertaining to the content at the end of the chapter. The cd has 1,000s of questions, tests, and practice questions.

I walked into the test last week, extremely nervous. Having finished this entire book, I knew there was nothing more i could have done. I started the test, hoping for 265 questions again, as i thought that was the only hope i had of passing. You cannot even imagine my surprise when the computer shut off at 75! I was beyond shocked! I cried there in the testing center! Then went home and waited 2 days. I was shaking when i logged on to see! AND I PASSED! i am 100% sure that this book is the reason I passed. I am so grateful i found this book! A must buy!

The ONLY NCLEX Review You Really Need!

I purchased the 4th edition of this book about a year ago, and started using it in earnest about four weeks before the boards. The chapters that specifically discussed the exam structure, and how to truly "read" each NCLEX question, were essential. The content review chapters (the bulk of the book) were brief but comprehensive. The questions at the end of each of those chapters provided thorough rationales for the correct answers, as well as reasons why the incorrect answers were just that.
The accompanying CD provided valuable feedback regarding areas of strength and weakness. While it is good to have as many practice questions thrown at you as possible in book form, the CD challenges you in the way you will be tested; i.e., on the computer. So when the big day comes, you will be ready for the style of the NCLEX as well as its substance.
Two quick tips regarding the boards: 1) Schedule them for a time of day when you are at your best. If you are not a morning person, late morning or early afternoon test times will probably work better for you. 2) Study thoroughly, but it is better to finish your studies two days before the exam. Give yourself the day before to clear your head and relax (yeah, right!) on the eve of the boards. If you do not know the material by then, you are probably not going to learn it the day before.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I passed my boards at 92 questions, thanks in no small part to Ms. Silvestri's book. Many thanks to her, and best of luck to all of the soon-to-be nurses.

A Must Have for the NCLEX

This is a good book to review all the material comprehensively after completing nursing school and studying for the NCLEX. I would find it difficult to memorize this material straight from the book; without having learned it before. What is it good for? During nursing school, this book will summarize what you REALLY need to know about disease conditions and how to perform procedures and such. Its the short version. But if you want in-depth details you need to go to the book.

What's it good for on NCLEX? This book helped me to see the material I learned from in NCLEX perspective and helped give me a mindset for what to look for. After taking the NCLEX I can say this book DEFINITELY helped me on most questions to say --- that's DEFINITELY the answer. I believe it helped me see right through NCLEX's hidden topics within the question.

I breezed through NCLEX first time with 4 days of studying after graduation in 85 questions.

So how do I know it works? (I only had 4 days to study because of a family event that happened.... but in those 4 days I read this book from 7am-1am the next day for 3 1/2 days; I read the ENTIRE book). I also used it during nursing school and made a 3.72 GPA; this book was awesome and I always recommended it to others.

The book gave me the REVIEW I needed. Because I'll be honest, there's a LOT I had forgotten that I covered within the past year of nursing school. This book brought me up to date on all the specific conditions and treatments within just 3 1/2 days.

So anyway. It did its job. And again, to those in nursing school: the details ARE important and you won't gain understanding of the BIG concepts through this book. You learn that in school. This is a review. Not a substitute for messing around in nursing school for 2 years and then deciding you want to learn the material to pass NCLEX.

In all organisms, genetic information—in the form of a sequence of nucleotides in DNA—is selectively expressed, as shown by the lighted spots of the DNA microarray in the background. Genetic information directs the synthesis of proteins. Each protein has a unique shape that can be visualized in three dimensions, as depicted by the blue surface model, and also has a unique metabolic function. For example, the protein shown on the cover is an enzyme whose activity contributes to the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. Biochemists build on their knowledge of molecular structure and function to design compounds that can selectively interact with proteins in order to modulate their behavior. In this example (discussed in Box 10-B on page 280), the drug imatinib is shown as a green shape that fits snugly into the active site of the enzyme, blocking its activity and thereby inhibiting cancer growth.

Appreciating the structures and functions of biological molecules requires more than looking at pictures or reading about them. This book is designed not only to present information but also to help students develop the ability to answer questions, creating opportunities for them to explore and discover all aspects of biochemistry.

The best introductory biochemistry textbook for a 1 semester class

Pratt and Cornely have done the almost impossible. They have put together an informative biochemistry textbook that is very well designed and will not overwhelm students in a 1 semester course. The boxed Biochemistry Notes, Problems and Answers, and Clinical Connections are definite pluses, as well as the well thought out end-of-chapter question sets.

I wish the publisher would make the book-related online material available to all those who have purchased a copy of the book. Content on the WileyPlus site appears to be available only to instructors and students registered for a course. Those who bought the book for self-study are out-of-luck. That is unfortunate, as this is an excellent text for self-study.

If you are using Lehninger buy this one too. It's not quite as comprehensive but it's actually possible to make sense of the topics with this book. Lehninger is clearly written by talented scientists but they are not so talented in the teaching and writing aspects of their bussiness. This book is solid on the science and very well written.

Great methodology book

Whether you're new to phage research or have been doing it for some time like myself (almost a decade), this book and it's accompanying volume 2 are a must for any phage researcher. It's full of easy to follow procedures with hints/notes that will help understand the purpose of some of the steps undertaken.
I would highly recommend this book: not only is it the new 'Adams' (phage bible) equivalent, but it's also affordable.

Good Reference book for starting a consulting firm

I have been reading this book and others as a reference to help me start a consulting business. I would think that someone who is going into business as a consultant would know a little about business so I skipped over those chapter. I found marketing, finding the clients, and creating the environment for the sale important. The issue on contracts and what to charge extremely important to my future. Unfortuantely I am starting a marketing and sales consulting firm and I found little to no reference on examples. This book is primarily for engineers, accounts, and attorneys.
I will always keep this book as a valued reference as I add clients to my clients.

The Best book on Consultating

I picked this book up, not because I am a consultant, but because I am an executive at a company that uses consultants frequently. I was hoping to spot in these pages all of the "tricks of the trade" that consultants use so that I would be a smarter customer of consulting services. As someone that occasionally loathes, and infrequently appreciates the perspectives of so-called outside experts, I was pleasantly disappointed (yes, pleasantly disappointed) to see that what Holtz and Zahn are suggesting in these chapters is non-manipulative, ethical, and above board practices that in no way try to take advantage of a customer that is not as sophisticated as perhaps they need to be. I was disappointed because I wanted to be armed with ways of combatting what I perceive to be the car salesman approach taken by far too many of the consultants I have worked with in my career. Perhaps the fault is as much mine as the consultants we hired. Maybe I have to spend more time doing exactly what this book recommends consultants do when it comes to; scoping out projects, ensuring agreement on objectives, managing project timelines, and agreeing on how to fairly compensate the consultant for his or her assistance. I found this book pleasant in that it convinced me that not all consultants are cut out of the cloth of the "give me your watch and I will tell you what time it is" type. Seeing what the consultant is SUPPOSED to be doing when engaging with a client (me) and being able to compare that to what happens in my company makes me want to buy this book for a few of our most senior executives and dog-ear those pages that they need to read. The chapters on how to set up a business, accounting, and other organizational necessities were initially of little interest to me as my focus was on the actual working with the consultant, but even those chapters were enlightening in that I better understand why the consultants we use pressure me about some things and not others. The point made about cash flow being critical to the success of the consultant over and above other issues was not something I would have realized on my own. Now that it was explained, I can understand and appreciate it better.
