Love the murder mystery set in the Everglades. Gives your Florida readers a real treat. The second story of a son learning that there are always two sides to a story, and love and forgiveness before it is too late can be a great love story.

A First-Rate Southern Courtroom Thriller

You really need to read one of James Sheehan’s books if you haven’t already. Sheehan, a trial attorney for some three decades who now teaches trial law, toils in the genre of --- can you guess it? Say it with me --- courtroom thrillers. But he is more concerned with characters than with legalese. My guess is that Sheehan was warmly received by the bench when he appeared in court, given that he has that wonderful and all-too-rare ability to lay out the facts --- his story --- in an entertaining manner without sounding as if he is in love with his own voice. That ability was manifested in his critically and commercially acclaimed Jack Tobin novels and is demonstrated once again in his latest work.

THE ALLIGATOR MAN introduces a new character in the form of Kevin Wylie, a Miami defense attorney. Wylie is employed in a firm where he is a rising star, second only to Bernie Stang, the owner of the firm who keeps Wylie on a “first among equals” status behind himself. Wylie is considering striking out on his own, but is fired by Stang before being given the opportunity to quit. Worse, Stang makes it more than clear that he does not want Wylie practicing in Miami. At the same time, Wylie’s girlfriend is making noise about coming to a parting of the ways. In the midst of these twin crises, Wylie receives a telephone call advising him that his father has terminal cancer and is asking to see him. The man is only a distant memory in Wylie’s past, given that Wylie has not seen him since he was a child. Wylie reluctantly travels to St. Albans, where his father, a noted defense attorney in his own right, has some revelations for him that will challenge beliefs about himself and his family that he held as gospel.

Meanwhile, other events are overtaking Wylie that will have a direct bearing on his future. A man named Roy Johnson has gone missing in the Florida Everglades, leaving behind nothing but a wallet and some scraps of his clothing deep in the swamp. Johnson is a notorious figure, having founded a company named Dynatron and cashing out of it just ahead of its failure, leaving investors bereft of millions of dollars and hundreds of employees without their jobs or pensions. Johnson is guilty as sin but has never been charged with anything. Not exactly a popular man, no one is especially upset when he goes missing, apparently as the result of a close encounter with some alligators. The incident, coupled with Johnson’s personality, earns him the nickname “The Alligator Man.”

However, when the statement of an eyewitness establishes that Johnson’s disappearance is the result of foul play, the police do not lack for suspects; there are hundreds of them. The most likely one is a man named Billy Fuller, a former employee of Dynatron who lost his wife to cancer and his home as a direct result of Johnson’s actions. Wylie takes on Fuller’s defense, even though it at appears to be all but impossible to defend Fuller, who was in the area, made vague threats, and certainly had a motive to kill Johnson.

As he prepares for trial, Wylie finds that he is reconnecting with his father and avails himself of the famous attorney’s wife’s counsel in mounting the best defense possible in representing his client. In the course of his preparation for trial, Wylie uncovers several startling revelations, including one that leads him directly back to Stang. Every piece of evidence helps; all that Wylie needs to do is create “reasonable doubt” concerning Fuller’s guilt. Yet the case against Fuller seems airtight, even as Wylie attempts to establish that Johnson’s shady activities in the past made him a target for murder. When the trial is conducted and the jury reaches its verdict, that is not the end. Not by a long shot.

James Sheehan makes you care about his “clients”: Wylie, Fuller, and some other memorable folks you will meet along the way. The story never gets bogged down in legal minutiae and, interestingly enough, is as much about Wylie establishing his relationship with his long-estranged father as it is about the jury reaching its verdict. That is a plus, one of many that you will find sprinkled throughout THE ALLIGATOR MAN, which hopefully will be the beginning of a new series.

Latoya Chandler is a New York-based writer. She enjoys her career as an executive assistant to the CEO of a non-profit organization. Torn...Six degrees of separation

I was gifted this book and I must say it was one of the best gifts I've received.Talking about six degrees of separation,my goodness if ever there was one. I think every last character is this novel was psychotic. No doubt, Tae was she dealt with a lot but it didn't give her no reason to treat her husband that way. Darnell all he wanted to do was love his wife and that he did. Nae if that's how you love your best friends I'll rather do without. Sharon had to be the craziest of them all to do the things she did; with BK coming in a real close second.Walter I just can't with him, I really think that he is the old man BK was talking about, ugh how gross. Nard has to be the sanest of the bunch and that ain't saying much, but at least he had is partner's back, he actually is a true definition of a friend. i won't give anymore away I just recommend you do get this book. I couldn't put it down and I found myself trying to skip to the back just to see what was going to happen. This is definitely a great read.

Explosive and Exciting!

I couldn't wait for this book to be released, and let me tell you it didn't let me down. I've never seen so many people with tumultuous lives. The way that the Latoya has intertwined their stories was nothing short of amazing. After reading this story it will have you sitting back thinking about the people in your life. Lol! I was saddened by the way it ended, only because I didn't want it to, but I look forward to part 2. Great Job Latoya and I look forward to reading more of your work.

A wonderful read

"Torn" by Latoya Chandler is a fascinating and highly entertaining read. This is the first story by this author I have read, and I found it to be well written and well edited. In the book so many bad things can happen to people through no fault of their own, while with other people one mistake can haunt them forever. And then, there are many points in the story that I thought I knew where things were going, but now I am not so sure. It really is messing with my head! and I loved it :o) The realness of the characters and plot are what makes this book exceptional and I am anxiously waiting for part two! If you like romantic thrillers, this is a wonderful read.

Astounding!

This book is a masterpiece about a masterpiece. Not only is it the best catalog I know of displaying these breathtaking world treasures, it's also the only one I've ever seen that zooms in close on this style of work, visually and textually, graphically and technically. If you have ANY interest in seeing these pieces as if you owned them, or have ever wondered about the techniques behind such work, don't hesitate. Over my long lifetime of collecting books and catalogs concerning Japanese painting, I've never seen anything like it and have always wanted to; it's a deeply-held wish granted. A thousand thanks to all who helped make it happen.

Beautiful

This book has been released in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name that opened at the National Gallery in Washington DC on 30 March. The exhibition is only on for 30 days, and it's doubtful whether the paintings will ever be on display in the US again as they are rather fragile and have only been displayed all together once before in over 100 years.

As a local I've been to see the exhibition several times and it is truly superb: the detail in the 30 bird-and-flower paintings is wonderful, but also the arrangements of the plants and animals is lovely. When you go back to see the scrolls again (and again) you keep gaining new appreciation of the works. Little details catch your eye such as the tilt of a bird's head, the patterning of the roosters' feathers, the little wavy feathers on the back of the phoenix's neck, the exquisite scales of the fish. Initially I wondered why there were so many paintings of humble chickens, but after studying them so much I now appreciate that the rooster, in all its different plumages, is a truly beautiful bird!

It's because of the great beauty in the little details that a good catalog book is a very worthwhile purchase. I browsed the display copies in the National Gallery and they looked very good, with lots of nice blow-ups of different sections of the paintings. Unfortunately, the books sold out very early into the exhibition so I've placed my order with Amazon and I hope it arrives soon. It will be a terrific souvenir of a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition.

Sets a new standard for art history books

This is the most amazing art history book that I have ever seen! Finally a book that gives the reader as complete a visual experience as could be had without seeing the actual paintings. This book sets a new standard for all such works in the future. All other art history books and catalogues pale by comparison to this show catalogue.
First, we get a presentation of the exhibit in its entirety, and how each painting contributes to the whole. Next, at least three levels of viewing are presented for each painting, the overall painting, closer views of key areas, and finally seeing a close and detailed view of the paint on its textile surface. It continues with the historical and cultural analysis of the period of the paintings creation and finally a thorough analysis of the technical aspects of the paintings; pigment, paint, supports, etc. Just a fabulous exploration of a small body of work by one painter. Amazing.
When I saw the story about this exceptional exhibit on the PBS News Hour I really regretted that I did not have the money to fly from the west coast to Washington to see the paintings. This book is definitely the next best thing and at at quite a reasonable cost considering the alternative. I have not as yet read all of the text, but if it lives up to the visual impact, as I feel sure it will, it will still be a total understatement of the triumph this book manifests. The acknowledgements page is an understatement to the paeans of praise this book and its creators deserve. Thanks to all who worked on this magnificent gift to art lovers.
